The following guide features a detailed StrongVPN Review where we explore features, speeds, price, device installations, and much more.
This StrongVPN Review comes after weeks of testing on various devices including the Amazon Firestick.
TROYPOINT TIP: You will also find a setup video below for Firestick, Fire TV, and Android TV Box. We suggest watching this for more details and tips on using this VPN!
StrongVPN is an industry-leading virtual private network (VPN) that offers more than 950 VPN servers in over 30 countries.
This VPN service has also been featured in notable publications including the New York Times, TechCrunch, TechRadar, Tom’s Guide, and others.
The most notable feature of StrongVPN is its WireGuard® protocol. They were the first commercial VPN provider to offer this VPN Protocol.
The WireGuard® protocol is not provided in most VPN services and some of its advantages include upgraded encryption standards, improved reliability, enhanced rapid connection speeds, and more.
We conducted several speed tests on StrongVPN’s WireGuard® and OpenVPN protocols in this review, which you can find below.
Below you will find an in-depth StrongVPN Review where we dive into the VPN provider’s highlights, speeds, installation guides, price, comparisons, and more.

What We Don’t Like

No SOCKS5 Proxy Server which is important for Torrenting security
WireGuard Protocol
StrongVPN was the first commercial Provider to implement WireGuard® Protocol into their VPN service.
WireGuard is considered the most secure, fast, and simple VPN Protocol available today.
This technology is built right into the StrongVPN App so you can simply choose this option when connecting to Strong.
One of the best features of StrongVPN’s WireGuard® Protocol is the ability to implement it into your wireless router.
This will ensure you are protected on any device connected to your network.
Oftentimes, VPN Speeds are extremely slow after establishing a connection on a router.
However, StrongVPN with WireGuard® Protocol on your provides extremely fast speeds for a fabulous streaming experience.
StrongVPN Review – Zero Log Policy
StrongVPN provides a zero log retention policy that means they do not store any user data or information.
Strong owns and operates its own servers which means your online data stays completely private.
In addition, StrongVPN stores zero logs so your information or activity will never reach the hands of any third parties.
Users can ensure complete anonymity and privacy when using StrongVPN on any device.
StrongVPN & Streaming Services
StrongVPN is a less popular VPN which means that it may work well with streaming services that normally block VPN connections.
In our tests, StrongVPN worked fine with the most popular services, Netflix and Prime Video.
Amazon Prime Video was especially surprising as this is one that usually blocks most VPNs. Kudos to StrongVPN for getting by that block!
However, it did not work when we attempted to play a movie on Peacock TV.
Keep in mind that the split tunneling feature within StrongVPN will allow you to ignore VPN connections for services that don’t work properly.
All VPNs suffer from this setback due to these popular streaming apps always finding new ways to block the more popular VPN services.
StrongVPN Speeds
As stated above, StrongVPN owns and operates its own VPN Servers for its customer base.
This means that there is no “middleman” that the company uses to route their traffic through.
Strong provides an extremely fast VPN Connection no matter the device you are using.
Because we oftentimes use a VPN on multiple devices at once, you are sure to find the speeds suitable for streaming HD videos and more.
StrongVPN Review – Speed Tests
Speed is arguably the most important feature to consider when comparing VPN providers.
No matter which VPN service you use, you will experience a slight drop in download speeds because your traffic is routed through a separate VPN server and your connection is encrypted.
This is important when using Streaming Apps and IPTV Services on your device, as download speeds play a huge factor in buffering and playback.
We conducted several speed tests for our StrongVPN review to see where this VPN ranks among the other popular services like IPVanish VPN.
Below you will find speed test results using an Amazon Firestick and a Windows PC.
Although there are hundreds of Internet speed tools available, for this example I am using the Analiti Speed Test app on the Firestick, and our TROYPOINT Speed Test tool on Windows PC.
Unfortunately, Analiti is only available on Firestick/Android devices, which is why we are using the TROYPOINT Speed Test tool with the PC.
You can install Analiti through both Amazon App Store and Google Play on your various streaming devices.
The following speed test was conducted on 100 Mbps max Internet plan.
Wireless tests were conducted through ASUS AC3100 Router which is approximately 20 feet away from device.
Firestick/Fire TV Speed Tests
Prior to testing different VPN speeds, it’s important to understand how to change protocols within the StrongVPN app.
Depending on your Internet Service Provider (ISP), some protocols perform better than others and you should test speeds on all of them to determine your best fit.
In this example, we are using the Amazon Fire TV Stick Lite.
1. Launch the StrongVPN App on your Firestick/Fire TV and click the Settings icon in the upper right of the screen.
2. Select VPN Protocol.
3. Select the VPN protocol you want to use.
4. That’s it! Return back to the home screen and click connect
That’s it! Now check out our results below after testing speeds.
When testing we used the same country, city, and server to make sure these factors were constant.
We also tested both the WireGuard® and OpenVPN (UDP) protocols since these are the most popular.
Note: When switching between protocols to test speeds, always click Disconnect before changing to another protocol.
WireGuard® Protocol on 100 Mbps Internet Plan
Wi-Fi: 80 Mbps down & 21 Mbps up
Ethernet: 82 Mbps down & 21 Mbps up
OpenVPN (UDP) Protocol
Wi-Fi: 52 Mbps down & 21 Mbps up
Ethernet: 82 Mbps down & 14 Mbps up
Fastest StrongVPN protocol on Firestick/Fire TV for 100 Mbps Internet Plan – WireGuard®
You will need to test each protocol on your own device to determine what works best with your Internet Service Provider.

Windows PC VPN Speed Tests
When using the StrongVPN application on a PC, you will notice there are more protocol options to choose from.
To switch between VPN protocols on a PC, follow the two short steps below.
1. Launch the StrongVPN app on your PC and click the Settings icon on the top right.
2. Select Protocol in the upper menu and choose whichever protocol you prefer.
3. Return back to the main screen and click Connect.
That’s it! Now check out our results below after testing speeds on a Windows PC.
Similar to our Firestick tests, we used both the WireGuard® and OpenVPN (UDP) protocols.
We used the TROYPOINT Internet Speed Test to measure our results.
Note: When switching between protocols to test speeds, always click Disconnect before changing to another protocol.
WireGuard® Protocol
Wi-Fi: 93.2 Mbps down & 83.2 Mbps up
Ethernet: 96.4 Mbps down & 88.9 Mbps up
OpenVPN (UDP) Protocol
Wi-Fi: 82.1 Mbps down & 65.3 Mbps up
Ethernet: 87.4 Mbps down & 72.2 Mbps up
Fastest StrongVPN protocol on Windows PC – WireGuard®

Pricing
Price is always one of the most important factors when choosing a VPN service.
As seen in the image below, you will find that StrongVPN has a very competitive price when compared to other popular VPN providers.
As of this writing, StrongVPN currently offers two subscription plans:
$34.99/year with free 250GB of SugarSync Storage
$5/month with free 250GB of SugarSync Storage
The prices above are subject to change.
Both plans come with 250GB of SugarSync Cloud Storage and a 30-day money-back guarantee so you have nothing to lose!

If you are new to VPNs you may be wondering if there are free options available, and yes there are free VPNs.
However, free VPN services make money by selling your data to third parties which negates the reason for having a VPN in the first place.
Free VPN services are also very slow and you will see a dramatic loss in download speed when compared to premium brands such as StrongVPN.
StrongVPN vs. IPVanish VPN
Many TROYPOINT visitors will be wondering where we feel StrongVPN ranks in comparison to IPVanish, which has been our top recommended VPN for five years.
While both VPNs are great options for any cord-cutter and those new to this technology, StrongVPN lacks a few advanced settings and important features compared to IPVanish.
This includes fewer VPN servers around the world, no SOCKS5 Proxy Server, can’t choose specific server within locations on streaming devices. Also, StrongVPN allows for up to 12 devices whereas IPVanish supports unlimited devices.
Many of us use more than 12 Internet-connected devices and this is where IPVanish VPN truly shines. You can use their service on as many gadgets as you would like.
As of this post, the main feature that come with StrongVPN which isn’t included yet in IPVanish VPN is the WireGuard® protocol. According to sources from IPVanish, WireGuard® should be available sometime in 2021.
All VPNs change their prices quite often and you may find that StrongVPN has a better price than IPVanish, plus it includes free SugarSync encrypted storage.
This may be appealing to those who don’t need unlimited devices or SOCKS5 Proxy support that IPVanish offers.
StrongVPN also seems to work better with popular streaming services than IPVanish.
We were surprised to see that StrongVPN worked great with Amazon Prime when connected to the Chicago server.
As mentioned earlier, this is probably due to not being on the radars of the popular streaming services yet.
It’s important to point out that some VPNs perform better than others based on network setup, Internet service provider, etc.
Both StrongVPN and IPVanish offer a 30-day money-back guarantee so you can try both and have the option for a refund if one doesn’t work properly.
We’ve had numerous people report that IPVanish didn’t work well but StrongVPN did.
IPVanish and StrongVPN are owned by the same parent company but operate on different servers. This is obvious based on the fact that Amazon Prime works with StrongVPN but doesn’t work on IPVanish.

StrongVPN Settings & Features
To access the settings menu, click the gear icon in the top-right corner.
Connect to VPN on device start-up will automatically launch the application when the Firestick or Fire TV is turned on.
We suggest leaving this off because there are some applications that we don’t use the VPN with.
VPN Protocol is the connection protocol used by the application.
The available VPN Protocols within StrongVPN include WireGuard®, IKEv2, OpenVPN (TCP), and OpenVPN (UDP).
WireGuard® usually provides faster download speeds when using a VPN so we recommend that option.
If your VPN app is not connecting, it may help to switch your connection protocol.
Split Tunneling allows the user to choose apps that can connect to the Internet without being routed through the VPN.
This is handy when using applications that don’t allow for VPN use such as Peacock TV, Prime Video, Disney Plus, and other paid services.
Once inside the Split Tunneling settings, you can check which apps don’t require VPN protection.
Allow LAN access when turned on will not route local are network traffic through the VPN.
I keep this setting turned on so that I can connect to the Firestick/Fire TV through the network with various apps such as Plex or the Amazon Fire TV Remote control app.
Open source licenses will provide documentation with the licenses used within the StrongVPN application/service.
Terms of Service provide their most recent document.
Contact will direct you to the StrongVPN customer support information. Support can be contacted through live chat, email, or phone.

You will notice a Help button on the bottom of the StrongVPN Website for live chat. Customer support via email is also available.
StrongVPN Review – Final Verdict
Overall, StrongVPN is a less known, yet powerful VPN service that is starting to gain traction among cord-cutters and techies.
This is a solid VPN choice for those wanting the WireGuard® protocol, easy-to-use applications, 12 device connections, and an inexpensive annual plan.
However, due to a lack of Settings/customization options, no SOCKS5 Proxy Server, speed issues outside of the US, fewer servers, and limited split-tunneling options, this VPN service isn’t as versatile as IPVanish.
For our overall StrongVPN Review, TROYPOINT gives this VPN service 4.4/5 stars.
