According to the official CNN press release, the decision to shut down the CNN+ service was made by the new management team in charge of Warner Bros. Discovery Inc.

About a month ago we saw WarnerMedia merge with Discovery in an effort to form a better-combined product.

The prior management team’s vision for CNN+ differed from Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav’s plan for the new streaming service.

Zaslav has been open in the past about his desire to combine all of the company’s streaming assets, which also include Discovery+ and HBO Max, under a single umbrella.

Discovery’s streaming boss, J.B. Perrette, commented on the shutdown of CNN+ on such short notice:

“This decision is in line with WBD’s broader direct-to-consumer strategy. In a complex streaming market, consumers want simplicity and an all-in service, which provides a better experience and more value than stand-alone offerings, and, for the company, a more sustainable business model to drive our future investments in great journalism and storytelling.”

Perrette then continued trying to promote some optimism about the situation.

“We have very exciting opportunities ahead in the streaming space and CNN, one of the world’s premier reputational assets, will play an important role there.”

The report goes on to mention that hundreds of CNN+ employees may lose their jobs.

One employee even commented the following anonymously:

“At first people were really freaking out, and then toward the end of the meeting, it just turned to sadness. Every team was just huddling with each other.”

As for current subscribers of the CNN+ service, “customers will receive prorated refunds of subscription fees,” the company said.

Overall, it will be interesting to see how this plays out and if any future streaming services will be launched under the new management team for Warner Bros. Discovery.
